For your consideration is the antique, circa 1895, advertising game of the BUSINESS MEN'S SERIES by L. L. DOUD.  The game is complete with an Instruction Card and 40 cards 10 sets of 4) advertising businesses in MENDOTA, ILLINOIS, as follows: 

The cards measure 2-1/2 inches by 3-1/2 inches.  The back of the Instruction Card of Joker is an advertisement for E. H. REYNOLDS, Pianos, Organs, Musical Merchandize of  Rochelle, Illinois.  The backs of the playing cards are blank

The firm of L. L. Doud offered these decks to promote the businesses of towns across the country.  

The Association of Games and Puzzles International lists L. L. Doud (publisher) as 

AGPI # P-972.


CONDITION: The game is complete with 41 cards: 10 sets of 4 cards, 1 instruction card or joker, and original box.. The cards are in good condition, rubbed and  soiled, but please note the following: 1) there are stains on several of the cards (easily seen in the photos) , 2) the bottom 3/8ths of an inch of one of the John H.  Deaner was torn off and is lacking, 3) another of the John H. Deaner cards has a heavy crease, 4) one of the Germania Bank cards has a heavy corner crease, 5) one ion the J. D. Tower & Sons Co. card has a long corner crease.  The box is in fair condition with old cellophane tape repairs that have tried out: as a result, one edge of the slip cover is loose and three of the corners of the box bottom are split.  Overall the box is rubbed, soiled, and  stained with penciled numbers inside the box bottom.  PLEASE MOUSE OVER THE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR CONDITION DETAILS. PLEASE MOUSE OVER THE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR CONDITION DETAILS.
