Almacs was founded in 1942 by Allen Pike. They quickly grew into a successful super market chain. In 1952 they introduced S&H Green Stamps which kept customers coming back. They grew to purchase Providence Public Markets in 1953 and were the largest supermarket chain in Rhode Island by the late 1960s. At their peak, they had 43 stores. They began to dwindle in the 1990s. The grocer company filed for bankruptcy in 1993. By 1995 all locations closed.
