This is a printed reproduction of a rare tailoring system from the late 1800s. It is called The Dress Makers' Magic Scale and was invented and marketed by Will C. Rood. The scale, unlike other tailoring systems, is one simple triangle with curves set into the interior.
The system includes 1 scale, one instruction booklet dated 32nd edition 1878-1879, and 1 bonus Advanced Studies Booklet Supplement No. 2 from 1889.
The booklets are printed in high-quality color and have been professionally staple-bound together into one booklet.
The main instruction booklet teaches pattern drafting with the scale including bodice front and back, Gabrielle (3 piece basque), walking skirt, cloaks and sacques, loose-fitting garments, double-breasted garments, circulars, yokes, cutaways, children's clothes, and sleeves. We have improved this booklet by adding color pictures of popular dresses from an issue of Le Bon Ton magazine from 1880.
The advanced studies booklets were supplements ordered by mail for current styles, extra collars, hoods, different sleeves, etc.
The size range of the bodice expands from an 18 to 56-inch bust!
The scale measures 20" long and is meant to be glued to poster board and cut out before use.
These pattern systems were marketed originally in the 1900s to both experienced seamstresses and professionals alike and assume that you have a solid understanding of clothing construction. To use these, you should have a basic understanding of how pattern pieces should fit together.
We have been professionally reproducing vintage patterns and books since 2008 and are very proud to offer very high quality, digitally drafted historically accurate reproductions.
