Antique Chinese Hand-Carved Wood Box – Shells, Stone & Insect Motif

This antique Chinese box features finely detailed carving in high relief across the lid, depicting an array of natural elements: shells, aquatic plants, flowing water, and a water bug in motion.  Details include the texture of razor clams, the delicacy of lily pads and insect legs, and the presence of a scholar’s stone. While the lid carving may be an older fragment, we attribute it to the early 20th century.  Handmade in China.

Condition:  Overall good but note there is a stable but old age crack running through the carved lid.  Please see the photos.   The original finish on the lid and exterior has mellowed and is a lighter color than the bottom and interior of the box.
