Kamajaya and Kamaratih are a couple of love deities in Javanese wayang tradition, symbolizing fidelity and harmony in a husband and wife relationship. Kamajaya is described as the most handsome god, while Kamaratih is known as the goddess of love and beauty. Their story has its roots in the kakawin “Smaradahana”, where Kamajaya is burnt by the fire from Lord Shiva's third eye for interfering with his asceticism, and Kamaratih faithfully follows him into the fire. Their spirits then descended into the world as an inspiration of true love for humans. In shadow puppet shows, they often appear as symbols of eternal love and unwavering loyalty.
