Coins destined for the Philippines and Puerto Rico were engraved and minted at the Madrid Mint, and then shipped to the overseas provinces.

Las monedas destinadas a Filipinas y Puerto Rico se grababan y acuñaban en la Casa de la Moneda de Madrid, siendo enviadas después por barco a las provincias de ultramar.

The busts of these coins were made by the engraver Bartolomé Maura Montaner .

On April 17, 1897, the value of the peso destined to be exchanged for the old eight-real coins was decreed. The value of this peso was differentiated from the Spanish pesos by the five-pointed stars on the obverse, which bore the year of minting, instead of the six-pointed stars corresponding to the Madrid Mint. The Manila peso has a diameter of 37 millimeters and a weight of 25 grams.

El 17 de abril de 1897 se decretó el valor del peso destinado a ser canjeado por los antiguos reales de a ocho. El valor de este peso se diferenciaba de los peninsulares por las estrellas de cinco puntas que figuran en el anverso y en las que se inscribía el año de acuñación, en lugar de las estrellas de seis puntas correspondientes a la Ceca de Madrid. El peso de Manila tiene un diámetro de 37 milímetros y un peso de 25 gramos.
