FARAWAY PLACES
by Connie Maloney Haun
An east Tennessee "hillbilly" takes the 1974 International Aerospace Educators' tour of the Orient and the Pacific islands. This is a dream fulfilled for the author. Her enthusiasm, exuberance, and intense interest know no bounds. One is literally carried along with her on this exciting trip.
The reader, equipped with accurate history and background given by the author, is taken to Tokyo, Kyoto, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Sydney, and many more strange and wonderful places. One of the most delightful and humorous trips was to Etai Island (one of the Fiji Islands). In spite of the author's sophistication as a seasoned traveler she still harbored the hillbilly's notion of the practice of cannibalism on the Fiji Islands. Even after the islanders treated the visitors with warmth and enthusiasm she still harbored a little of that fear when some of the tourists were taken by two huge natives on a sightseeing boat trip. Maybe they were a little hungry or maybe they still believed in cannibalism, she thought. The fear was, of course, momentary, and her book is filled with the graciousness and warmth of the people all over the world. As she points out, "It is a true saga with real people. People make the difference."
