Handsome
large-format fold-out 1971 official road map of Arizona, printed more
than
53
years ago.
- This map opens to 24" x 36"
and has great
detail on old
hgihway alignments, route numbers, and road surfaces.
- Among the details are cities, towns, Indian reservations,
parks, and
natural features, as well as state and federal highways, including U.S.
Route 66, which was still signed west of Williams, through Peach Valley
and Hackberry.
- The map also labels U.S. Route 666, nicknamed the
"Devil's Highway"
because of the reference in the Bible (Revelation 13:18):
Let
him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is
the number of a man: His number is 666.
- Although the road's
designation was simply
the result
of its being the sixth branch of U.S. 66, it generated sufficient
controversy that a few years ago the American Association of State
Highway and Transportation Officials gave it a new number: U.S. 491.
Consequently, U.S. 666 no longer appears on today's maps.
- A drawing by Walt Ditzen show a cartoon figure named Arizona Will and the slogan "Stamp Out LItterbugs." Ditzen drew the nationally syndicated Fan Fare cartoon strip, later renamed Fun Fare," and he helped and advised Charles Schulz on the early samples of Charlie Brown, the principal character of the comic strip Peanuts.
- There are inset
plans of
Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff, Yuma, Prescott, Kingman, Wendover, and northwestern Mexico.
- The map was issued by the Arizona Highway Department in
1971
and is dated on the cover.
- Condition: It is in very good, lightly used
with a faint crease, a few tiny spots, and no
rips, tears, or writing. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any
questions.
