Dive into the Golden Age of comics with Detective Comics #143, a treasured piece from January 1949. Featuring the Canadian variant, this comic book showcases the gripping adventures of Batman (Bruce Wayne) and his allies, rendered in vibrant color style. With a 7.0 Fine/Very Fine grade, it's a stellar example of wartime storytelling, complete with a dust jacket and boarded for preservation.
Crafted by legendary artist/writer duo Bob Kane and Curt Swan, and adorned with a cover by Jim Mooney, this first printing is a must-have for aficionados of classic superhero action and adventure. Published by DC Comics, this single unit comic book is a genuine piece of superhero history, meant for a general audience and printed in English, celebrating the rich tradition of US comics.
This is a real sweet comic. Look at that cover! You just don't see these Golden Age comics in this shape raw that often. This is a Canadian variant. From our research the Canadian variants at the time did not have any ads in them and they didn't always have every story the American version had. Therefore, this comic has 32 pages and not 52. Don't be alarmed, the ads were at least 10 pages back then so you may not have 1 story of 10 pages.
Here are the stories you do get: The primary Batman story "The Pied Piper of Peril"...12 pages. Sierra Smith Western Detective....8 pages. Robotman....6 pages. Slam Bradley.....6 pages.
We listed this comic as FN/VF because there are a couple minor issues. The cover does have a small crease and a small fold in the top right corner as well as some mini tears at the right side near the top right corner, see pics. The binder is good but has a few ticks, see pic. Nice off-white pages. The back is good, but there are some tears/missing pieces at the top left corner, see pic. If it wasn't for those, this comic could easily fetch a VF, maybe better. At the very least, it is worth a CGC trip.
Our research also told us that the Canadian variants are pretty scarce...much lower print run, so to find one in this condition is remarkable. You can tell it is the Canadian variant because it says "Published in Canada" in the title where the American version would say "A 52 Page Magazine." This is a superb add to any Golden Age collector. Better grab it before it is gone.
