Unable to categorically confirm my description but from my own research I believe this is possibly a Victorian calling card holder.

It appears to be made of what appears to be cardboard covered in ? Leather and embossed in gold. There is lots of wear and marks evident but unsurprising for its age. Please see pictures attached
