Underground
Ticketing System (UTS) cards in yellow are around credit card size and
were used from 1987 until 1993 when pale pink coloured cards replaced
them; advertisements on the rear started slightly earlier. All cards
have magnetic strips on the reverse, most after 1987/88 carry conditions
and a 4-digit print order code. TfL still uses UTS in modified form and
hugely reduced quantities, as detailed in Wikipedia.
Decoding
vital info centrally on the right hand side, machine series starting 01
upwards related to now-closed staffed Ticket Office windows; 10 onwards
relate to self-service Fewfare machines; series 31 etc comprise a
complex Multifare variant. To the left is a four-digit National Location
Code (NLC) of stations starting 0; NLCs from 1001 are used by National
Rail.
