stampless Civil War Patriotic with brown and blue and red Eagle and Shield in frame of red stars design, soldier's endorsement from "G.F. Rogers, Act(ing?) Major" in the 5th Regiment N.Y. Volunteer's at top, "Due 3" handstamp at center, and "Sharpsburg Oct. 8" circular datestamp with state not visible at bottom, addressed to "Aaron Muckridge, 741 Washington St., New York City NY"

Someone wrote "1864" in pencil but this makes no sense because the NY 5th was mustered in May 1861 and mustered out May 1863. Thus, this must be 1861 or 1862. I determined 1862 because the regiment's history states the 5th NY was at The Battle of Antietam (also called the Battle of Sharpsburg) near Sharpsburg Maryland and Antietam Creek. on September 17, 1862, and we have a cover with an October 8th Sharpsburg cancel.

Furthermore, my online research (dmna dot ny dot gov/historic/reghist/civil/rosters/Infantry/5th_Infantry_CW_Roster dot pdf) lists Aaron P. Muckridge Jr. as a member of the NY 5th who enlisted at 19 years old in New York City, was mustered in as private in Co. A to serve three years and was transferred to Co. E of the 146th New York Volunteers in May 1863 when the 5th NY was mustered out.

I first thought Aaron Jr. was among the 9,549 wounded during the battle, but the website listed earlier in this description does indicate whether or not a soldier was wounded and Aaron Jr.'s listing does not note him being wounded. It is possible Aaron Jr. got sick and Rogers wrote to Aaron Sr. to let him know.

The cover with tiny piece out at top edge and small piece out at bottom center, both of very minor importance. I did not make the display page.
