Here we have an extremely rare and appealing agateware seated cat dating to the mid-1770s. The cat is finely molded and would have been made by a master potter. This is molded from solid agate clay produced by mixing white, yellow, light and dark brown clay together producing this unique and attractive agate decoration. The potter then applied white glaze to the cat’s head, black dots for the cat’s eyes and blue glaze highlights to the inside of its ears. The result is a very appealing seated cat figure. The cat is hollow, you can see the depth of color on the cat which is glazed and compare that with the base that was not glazed. The cat measures 5 ½” to the tip of its ears by 4” in length and survives its original mint condition with no damage or repairs. At 250 years old, this beautiful cat is a survivor and has been cherished by many generations of collectors and now would be valued by any mochaware collector.
