Rare Postcard with Rare Stamp.  Approx. 5.5" x 3.5". Divided Back, canceled. Posted in 1907. Real Picture Postcard. Hard to Find. Postcard made in 1906 (?), posted in 1907. Real Picture Postcard. Hard to Find. Posted in 1907 w/ OFF CENTER Stamp -More off center than some I've seen!. The Postcard doesn't have the date of manufacture, possibly made in 1905 -1906, posted in 1907. Although the house on the front has "Residence of J.W. Barkdoll, Tremont, Ill 1884- I think that date may be mis-printed/wrong. The info I found on Barkdoll has him moving to Tremont around 1894. SEE ALL HIS INFO BELOW (he was the Mayor, after opening a Horse Buggy and Farm Implement Store in Tremont-also was in the Civil War at 16, and marched with Sherman!!!) . The postcard has a Green Benjamin Franklin 1 cent Stamp, OFF CENTER. Postcard has age darkening, age spots and age wear. Corners bumped, and card is slightly bowed. PLEASE SEE ALL PHOTOS BEFORE PURCHASE. May have finger smudges. Otherwise quite good for 115 years of life!! No other damage found.  PLEASE SEE ALL PHOTOS AND READ ALL INFO BEFORE PURCHASE. ** The precise color of the items may vary depending on the specific monitor, the settings and the lighting conditions. The item's color as depicted in this listing should only be used as a guide, as your monitor may show the colors differently.

Jacob W. Barkdoll moved to Tremont , Illinois from Mackinaw, Michigan in 1893, according to one set of info I located. Another has him still living in Mackinaw while establishing his store in Tremont in 1894. I think the Postcard has a misprint and it should read "1894", not "1884". That would make the age of the postcard fit better, also.
Barkdoll owned and operated a Buggy & Farm Implement Store in Tremont. (It faced East on the 200 Block of South James Street). At one time, he also ran a Creamery and a Blacksmith Shop. He was Tremont's Mayor in 1897 and was re-elected in 1902 for 5 years. At an early age, 16 years old, he joined the 38th Ohio Volunteer Infantry to fight in the Civil War with his brother. He was with General Sherman's March to the Sea.
