This rare and unique ashtray is a true Mid-Century Modern gem. Handmade in Montelupo, a region of Tuscany, Italy by Fratelli Fanciullacci for Raymor Brothers. It features a beautiful frieze of 5 women in a European style and attire, sculpted in the center of the piece. The square shape and large size make it suitable for cigars, cigarettes, and pipes, with large notches at each corner for added convenience. The ashtray measures 8.75” x 8.75” square and stands 2.25” tall. The base is footed slightly and the underside has a glossy finish and is textured.
The ashtray is made of clay and has a glazed, unglazed, and painted finish. It weighs 1 pound 10.7 ounces prior to packaging for shipping. The backstamp is painted and the item number is 8774. This original piece is perfect for collectors and lovers of European art pottery. This beautiful piece of artwork is in fabulous condition. The paint is vibrant and the pottery is very clean. Please refer to the photo gallery and zoom in on the photos. It is a mid century piece from the 50’s and thus has some minor wear from age. However, I’m not finding anything structurally wrong with the piece other than a few areas that have minimal wear. I don’t think it was ever used as an ashtray given the absence of residue. The ashtray makes a fantastic, decorative piece of artwork that doubles as a large and sturdy ashtray. This is a very difficult to find piece. I’ve seen bowls and one other smaller version of this piece but no others of this size, with the 5 ladies and color scheme. It would fit right in with a modern layout and easily with a mid century decor as well. The piece looks even better in person!
