This elegant vintage ensemble from Geoffrey Beene comprises a short coat and matching sleveless dress in a superb red, chocolate brown and black silk or silk blend fabric. Not sure whether the fabric is a jacquard strictly speaking, but it's very textured. The coat is about mid-thigh length with set-in sleeves and an unusual foldover neck treatment (see photos). It has small shoulder pads, flap pockets, and closes with four buttons. The matching dress has wide straps, a sweetheart neckline, hidden on-seam pockets, and an invisible back zipper. It is fitted through the bodice with short closed pleats at the waist that open to create fullness in the front of the skirt. There are no fabric labels, but my experience with fabrics and with Geoffery Beene tell me that the shell fabrics are probably 100% silk, although in this case they could be a blend. The coat lining is an impressive burgundy silk taffeta, and the dress lining is a luscious brown silk charmeuse. The dress is labeled size 12. Measurements confirm that size labels are consistent with modern sizing. Union labels and design elements place this ensemble in the mid to late 1990s.
