This is a 5.4" by 4.5" piece of paper that has

the autographs of Rev. Thomas C. Darst

and Rev. H. Fairfield Butt III.

Both of these autographs date to the late 1930s.

There is also a third autograph on the

reverse side, which I have not identified.

Rev. Thomas Campbell Darst  (1875-1948)

was the third Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese

of East Carolina, serving in that position from

1915 to 1945.

Darst was ordained deacon in 1902, and priest

in June 1903. From 1903 to 1905 he was rector

of Trinity Church in Upperville, Virginia; Emmanuel

Church in Middleburg, Virginia; and Redeemer

Church in Aldie, Virginia. In 1905 he became

rector of St Mark's Church in Richmond, Virginia,

while in 1909 he transferred to Newport News,

Virginia, to become rector of St Paul's Church.

Between 1914 and 1915 he served as rector of

St James' Church in Richmond, Virginia. Darst

was elected Bishop of East Carolina on October 7,

1914, and consecrated on January 6, 1915.

Holt Fairfield Butt III (1907-1951) was

at one point the Episcopal chaplain at

the West Point Military Academy. He

served as Chaplain in the U.S. Navy

during World War II.  After the war, he

served as Rector of Christ Protestant

Episcopal Church, in Baltimore, Maryland.

The autographs are in good condition, with moderate wear.

These autographs originally belonged to Clifford J. Benfield

(1924-2018), who started his collection of autographs of

church leaders and notable visitors as a choirboy in the 1930s.

A veteran of WW2, Cliff had a long successful career in

business. He served as Vice President at Columbia Records,

and as an Executive Vice President at CBS, The Lowes

Corporation, and American Express. He was founder

and president of Hay Career Consultants.

His life experiences included being held at the age of two

by Charles Lindbergh, shortly before the takeoff of the Spirit

of St. Louis. He was married to his wife Eunice for 68 years.
