SUNDAY TABLOID FULL PAGE COMIC STRIPS

The ABBIE AN’ SLATS comic strip, created and originally 

written by Al Capp, was in print from July 12, 1937 through 

January 30, 1971. It was illustrated by Raeburn Van Buren.  

Abbie and Slats were eventually confined to the daily strips and 

a secondary character, “Bathless” Groggins, became the 

protagonist of the Sunday strip.  In 1945, Capp’s brother, 

Elliott Caplin assumed writing chores on the strip.
