The 1870 Pattern and variations of the Red Ensign were the official flag of Canada until 1921 when it was re-designed to a simpler shield that we proudly carried in World War II - but maintained the beloved Maple Leaf at the bottom of the original Ensign Crest, right up to our modern flag.
