“Mile o’ Dimes” was fundraising to benefit the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis in honor of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s birthday. The foundation eventually became known as the March of Dimes, as Roosevelt urged people to contribute dimes to support polio research. This effort led to Roosevelt’s image being used on the dime beginning in 1946.
