Jack Beutel: Billy the Kid in  “The Outlaw” & TV’s Jeff Taggert in Judge Roy Bean

Mr. Beutel became an actor after his good looks were noticed while he was an insurance clerk.  Howard Hughes is supposedly the one who noticed him and decided that he could easily be an actor, so Mr. Hughes took Mr. Beutel under his wing.  Mr. Beutel starred opposite Jane Russell in “The Outlaw” in 1943, with Mr. Hughes as director. He went on to star in a few other movies, though the Navy interrupted his career.  Among his leading ladies, besides Miss Russell, were Mala Powers and Claire Trevor.  Interestingly, it has always been a dispute as to how his last name was spelled.  Upon research, I have found it noted as Buetel and Beutel.  It was rumored that Howard Hughes changed it to Buetel so that it would never be pronounced with a "long e" sound, making it the same as a bug name (beetle)!

My grandmother and mother collected film star photos and autographs from their respective eras.  I have silent movie star photos left from my grandmother, and film stars  from the 1940s and 1950s left from my mom.  My mom kept her collection in a scrapbook (and then removed them); and also numbered her photos in the order received.  I try to note all signs of pasting, numbers, pinholes, etc. in the description.  (The red ebay sign will not be imprinted on the photo; it is a security mark to prevent copying.)

In this glossy 5" x 7", the number 212 is written in the upper righthand corner.  There is no pinhole and no tears or divots on the photo.  There is minor discoloration on the righthand side of the photo (as facing the photo), limited to the white border.  The lower right corner also has a bend/crease to it.  Due to aging and handling, when viewed very closely in light, minor waving may be noticeable.  A rare find.
