Outstanding turn of the century oil on canvas --- likely the quay of French coastal town --- by listed New York artist Clarence La Verne Butler (b. 1850). Butler studied at the National Academy of Design and with Bouguereau and Ferrier at the Academie Julian in Paris. Butler spent a number of years in Europe where he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon. Butler also maintained a studio in New York in the 1890s and also taught at the Osgood Art School. In the 1890s Butler exhibited at the Detroit Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design. He moved to Framingham, Massachusetts in 1905. 

This oil on canvas is unsigned but is identied on a label attached to the stretcher, indicating the painting was sold by Allen Hall Co. in Boston in 1927. The painting measures 24" x 20" (painting size) and is in good condition with minor surface abrasions. Framed as shown.
