Own a piece of ceramics history! This is a platter made by Ernestine Salerno, and it is dated July 5, 1957. It measures 15" x 11 1/4", and this Wildflowers design #167 features multitudes of flowers in yellows, pinks, purples, blues and white.
The paint colors are a muted pastel; perhaps they were originally meant that way, or perhaps this has sat in the sun. In any case, it is still lovely.
There is one chip to report, up under the top edge, and a bit of a bite in the bottom left corner.
Ernestine (Virden) Cannon was an American ceramicist watercolorist, who lived in Italy after WWII. To help with employment, and in response to the poverty she was seeing, she opened her studio in 1948. In 1951 she was awarded the Neiman Marcus Fashion Award for her "creative designs" in "bringing new life to the ceramics industry in Italy. The factory closed with her death in 1969.
