This master salt is extremely rare.  Master salts were in use during the early 1800s.  At that time, salt was a valuable commodity and the form that master salts took reflected that.  They are always wide and squat with a wide foot so they wouldn’t tip over and spill.  This salt has a straight side with a wide white band and a continuous pink seaweed decoration.  Straight sided master salts are rarely found and the red mocha decoration make this an even rarer master salt.  Measuring 2 ¾” in width by 2” in height, the master salt is in remarkably fine original condition with no damage or repairs.  A photo of similar master salts can be found in Lisa McAllister's Collector's Guide to Yellow Ware Book II on page 60.  Yellow ware straight sided master salts are extremely rare mochaware forms that would enhance and be highly prized in any collection.
