Earl Marshawn Washington (born 1962) became known for creating woodcut and engraved prints that he falsely attributed to historical artists or to his supposed great-grandfather, “Earl Mack Washington” (1862–1952). His story about rescuing woodblocks from a fire-bombed Manhattan print shop in the 1880s was later revealed to be fabricated.
By 2004, Washington admitted to producing the prints himself, demonstrating an impressive ability to create works convincing enough to deceive collectors and experts. Despite the initial deception, his engravings have since gained recognition in their own right, and works signed or inscribed as "EM Washington" are now collected as examples of his craftsmanship.
