About this book: The play, which is in 3 acts, contains 3 male roles: The Reverend Timothy Bright; Ian Lanton, a composer; and Josiah Shortte, a retired tradesman; and 6 female roles: Mabel Lanton, Ian's wife; Caroline Lanton, Ian's sister; Susan Shortte, Josiah's wife; Lydia Shortte, Ian and Susan's daughter; Milly, a maid at the Shortte's and an unnamed maid at the Lanton's. The first act takes place at Hampstead on the present day at Lanton's House; the second act takes place at the Shortte's and the third act takes place at Lanton's again. Acts 1 and 2 pass almost simultaneously; whilst there is a six day lapse between acts 2 and 3. The play was privately produced in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on March 29th, April 2nd, 4th and 5th, 1919 with the following cast: The Reverend Timothy Bright was played by Norman Wright; Ian Lanton by Gordon Lea; Mabel Lanton by Nan Murray; Caroline Lanton by Florence Harding; Josiah Shortte by Fred Patterson and also Joseph Harding; Susan Shortte by Alice Gledson; Lydia Shortte by Sal Sturgeon; Milly by May Renwick; the Maid by Alice Gilbert and Galton, the singer in Act 2 by Jonas Nattrass
