This lion window stop is a magnificent piece of early pottery. This dates to the 1800’s and was used to prop open windows to let in fresh air. There were many different forms of window stops made and this is one of the most unusual I’ve ever seen. Lions were popular subjects for window stops and this is my favorite. The lion was crafted by a master potter and is the most finely and crisply molded lion window stop I’ve ever seen or owned. The light application of Rockingham glaze further accents the details. Because of the heavy use they got, they are almost always damaged. This window stop is in original fine mint condition with no damage or repairs. This measures 4” high and 4 ¼” long from front to back. Window stops were molded and because of the mass of the lion the inside is hollow, otherwise the clay would have split as it dried after molding. Window stops are rare examples of early American and English pottery and are seldom found in this fine condition. This is a spectacular piece of pottery any collector would want to own.
