Black pepper is known by its botanical name as Piper Nigrum. It is one of the most commonly used spices in the world which originates from the Malabar Coast of India. It is a sharp, pungent and aromatic spice, used in most recipes. Black peppercorns come from the berries grown on the Piper Nigrum vine, a perennial woody vine which can grow up to 4m tall. When the berries are harvested they are immersed in boiling water and then left to dry, giving them the brown/black colour. Black pepper has been studied for its potential antioxidant properties.
