Description:Who'd have imagined you could grow a tough, hardy outdoor gardenia a few years ago? Large pearly white, waxy double blooms, contrasting dramatically against rich, glossy evergreen leaves. This hardy shrub will be a prized specimen from the moment it's delivered to your door. And do not underestimate the fragrance, Gardenia 'Crown Jewels' has one of the strongest, most intoxicating scents that will fill patios, gardens and your home all summer long.
These thickly petaled, bowl shaped flowers will cover your shrub from July to September, whilst the attractive foliage with deep green leaves will remain all through the winter. Low maintenance and easy to grow in patio pots, beds and borders. Frost hardy though may need protecting in severe winters.
How to Grow:Plant gardenia in sheltered borders or containers in any well drained, rich fertile, neutral to acid soil. Choose a sheltered position in dappled or semi shade. Water regularly until gardenia plants are fully established. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the soils acidity over time. Where rain water is not an option we suggest a regular application of sequestered iron or sulphur chips to the pot compost or soil will boost the soil acidity.
More Info:Feed hardy gardenia plants regularly throughout the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Whilst this variety of gardenia is perfectly hardy, it will appreciate some winter protection during particularly cold periods. In very cold climates, container-grown plants may be moved to a cool, frost-free position for the winter. In spring, lightly prune stems to maintain their shape.
Culinary note: Use these extremely fragrant blooms in jams and preserves or add to cakes for extra flavour.
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
