Contents [taken from dustjacket flaps]: This second volume on German submarines, covers the designs studied after the outbreak of war, of which relatively few were even put into production. While Volume I dealt with conventional submarines, those described in this subsequent book are very different, and the scale drawings of the internal arrangements are particularly interesting for the uncompleted projects. As effective Allied counter-measures had made the surface of the sea unsafe for German submarines, it was only while submerged that they could lessen their chances of detection and destruction. The Germans therefore strove to produce the "time" submarine that could operate continuously submerged. This necessitated a closed-cycle engine, and success was nearly achieved with the Walter turbine, but the complications of the system were never entirely overcome. The snorkel air-mast, introduced as a stop-gap for conventional submarines, eventually provided for the most effective answer when fitted to fast diesel-electric submarines of large battery capacity able to undertake a submerged patrol. The outstanding feature of these designs was the complete subjugation of surface to submerged performance. This was evident in the streamlined hull of greater depth, absence of the prominent deck casing, and the more prominent conning tower as a fairing for the periscopes and snorkel. Supply and transport submarines also figure in this volume; the former to keep the operational boats longer on their war stations, and the latter to import vital new materials. There is also brief account of the midget submarines
