About this book: In two World Wars, the German Navy showed its undoubted skill in submarine warfare; they introduced it during the first war, and it brought them close to victory on both occasions. This book - and its companion volume - deals with the material as opposed to the historical aspect of German submarines during the Second World War. It lists in detail the evolution, development, and technical data on the greatest submarine fleet the world has ever seen, together with building details and the fate of each individual submarine. This volume covers the designs studied and put into production up to the outbreak, and during the early stages, of the war. These were conventional submarines, with dual diesel-electric propulsion, intended to spend a quarter of their time on the surface, submerging only to attack or escape detention. Consequently, surface performance was superior to that under water. This resulted in such characteristic features as the fitting of a low-angle gun, an extensive deck casing and externally stowed torpedoes. Effective Allied counter-measures eventually drove this type of submarine from the sea, but not until it had exacted its grim toll from warships and merchantmen alike.
