Kamakura-bori style of carving has more than 700 years of tradition. One account believes that the origin of this style dates back to the Kamakura period when a certain man named Kogen, grandson of the famous sculptor of Buddhist images Unkei, together with a Chinese immigrant named Chin Wa Kei, began to carve articles for use on Buddhist alters at the Hokke-do, a small temple used by the Shogun Yoritomo (1192-1198).
Many examples can be seen where carving is first made with the grain of the wood and then, without the usual first coating, black lacquer is first applied which is later covered once again in vermilion lacquer. It is also thought that this may be an imitation of the “koka ryokuyo” and other similar forms of carved lacquer ware which was being shipped from China.
These Kamakura—bori have as their basis the style of the Sung and Yuan dynasties of China, and were created in the pursuit of greater technical skill, greater beauty and greater ease of use. There is a certain sense of beauty is expressed in the technique of these carvings with delicacy and clarity.
With long use, the black lacquer undercoat will appear and we believe that this will only enhance the rich quality of the carving.
