FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION :

THE MOST RARE, AND IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND,

ALL ORIGINAL EGYPTIAN REVIVAL FROM 1780, ENGLISH CREAMWARE CANDLEHOLDER IN A SHAPE OF A SPHINX.

Egyptomania swept Britain after Admiral Nelsons decisive defeat of the French Navy at the Battle of the Nile had put an end to Napoleons attempt to add a piece of Egypt to his Empire. Nearly every English pottery catered to the frenzy with a version of an Egyptian Sphinx, and Wedgwood's Ornamental branch produced one in basaltes, but it is quite a different model from the present example.
