Being
offered on this auction is porcelain vase made by Rosenthal China, Selb,
Bavaria, Germany.
It is in Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style. It is made in variation of 'Rosari' décor.
Well-reputed Danish painter Julius-Vilhelm Guldbrandsen (1869 - 1960) designed this pattern in c.
1917. Guldbrandsen worked for Rosenthal from 1909 to 1924. In 1910 he became
head of the newly founded Rosenthal
Art Department.
In 1924 he switched to Hutschenreuther, also in the position of the Art Department
head. He designed for them few vases as well as Christmas plates. For Rosenthal
he also designed three Christmas plates. First of all he created the first ever
Rosenthal Christmas plate of 1910 and then in 1915 and 1916. Through the
introduction of new coloring techniques and the 'Rosari' motifs he decisively
created the brand image of Rosenthal products. Almost all of his porcelain
designs are in blue tones. Vase on this auction is in the shape of handless
amphora with wide opening. It is footed. This is Rosenthal form 44. It is
decorated with magnificent blue roses outlined with rich gold leaf garland. There
are identical garlands and roses on both sides. It has gold rim and gold band
near its base. Vase is marked on the backside with standard 'Rosenthale Selb Bavaria' mark in green
identifying production
of 1927.
Other marking is décor number 565 3 and 44 in gold on the backside.
Vase
measures about 4" in its widest diameter and stands about 8” tall. Condition is immaculate with no cracks or
chips found. Colors are bright and vibrant. Gold has no wear. Magnificent
and perfect piece of porcelain art. This porcelain is very thick and heavy.
