This is the gas damper strut that flips up the centre cubby box

Be aware that whilst one end comes off easily - the other end is pop riveted in place 

This can be prised or drilled off and a new pop rivet inserted to hold it in place

You'll need a very thin rivet - approx 7mm long or thereabouts

If yours is broken ... the lid won't pop up on its own.

With a new strut you push the release button and the lid rises
