About this book: This booklet chronicles the history of one of the most successful Music Societies in the country. With nothing more than courage at their disposal (certainly no money), the newly formed Rochdale Borough Music Society (as it then was) initiated a new concert series for Rochdale during the season 1980-81. And what an auspicious inauguration: The Amadeus String Quartet, Julian Lloyd Webber, the London Mozart Players, and to cap it all, one of the world's leading Violonchellist, Paul Tortelier, with his son Yan Pascal Tortelier, and daughter Maria de la Pau.
Since then, the Society has regularly held five or six concerts a season, with the greatest possible variety: - soloists, ensembles, vocal and instrumental, symphony orchestras, for example, the Hallé, choirs and bands. Artists have ranged from the world famous Annie Fischer, Igor Oistrakh, Amanda Roocroft, to Steven Osborne, Rafal Payne and Adrian Spillett.
The Society has commissioned new works and played an active part in engaging young people, particularly through educational programmes, and pre-concert performing opportunities, as well as helping and encouraging school children to attend the concerts.
The society is determined to forge ahead and continue to bring music and performers of the highest quality to Rochdale, as well as expanding the educational work, making music open to all who wish to be uplifted by all that music can offer.
