Being offered on this auction is
magnificent Art Deco porcelain sculpture made by Lorenz Hutschenreuther,
Selb, Bavaria. This is Hutschenreuther model number 2217. It is a part
of Hutschenreuther‘s ‘Feathered World’ collection (‘Gefiederte Welt’ in
German). Figurine features seagull flying in storm (Möwe im Sturm). Genuine
structure of porcelain beautifully resembles bird’s body. It stands on
pedestal decorated like a grass. It is all white. Looks splendid.
Hutschenreuther was well known as one of the greatest porcelain figurine
makers for about 200 years. Its most famous Lion mark is a symbol of high
quality and artistic design. Hutschenreuther’s art department was
established in 1917. Nowadays, the Lion mark is under umbrella of Rosenthal
Group. This figurine is marked on the backside with standard gold
production mark of Art Department used in c. 1970 - 1985.
Hans Achtziger (1918 – 2003) designed this figure - there is incised
‘ACHTZIGER’ on the backside. Hans Achtziger is one of the leading names in
German porcelain making industry. He was a leading designer for
Hutschenreuther during almost forty years. Born in Selb, he studied china
and porcelain before the war. He started with Hutschenreuther in 1946 and
was first sent to study architecture and crafts to Munich for two years.
Then he worked in Selb. He was director of Hutschenreuther’s Art Department
since 1972. Achtziger designed many beautiful Hutschenreuther’s coffee and
china sets as well as worked as an artist. He retired formally in 1981
keeping adviser function.
Figurine measures about 4” x 3” and
stands 7 ¼” tall. Condition is immaculate with no cracks or chips found.
