DIAL CORD 0.8 mm dia. White 10 Metre length
for Radio Sets etc.
My satisfied customers have now made over 1,200 transactions for Dial Cord.
About 56 years ago I first re-strung radio dials in my fathers shop, back then a regular radio servicing task, with the original cotton material which rotted and could be pulled apart after just a few years service. Today I can supply a synthetic material that does not rot and with virtually no stretch, should last indefinitely, and at a bargain price.
Note: that whilst some of the photos may show cord wound on a card, I have not sent any on cards for many years;
Instead it is sent as a loose coil to avoid any perceived damage to the Cord.
Note: If you require 0.5/0.6 mm for 1980's stereos etc. please see multi-choice listing 222369117704.
Note: If you require 0.8 mm x 20 OR 30 Metre lengths please see multi-choice listing 222369117704.
The 0.8mm is available NOW.
Note: The 0.8mm product has been specially manufactured as a result of direct collaboration between myself and the manufacturer/importer,
whilst other sellers may now be retailing it, please remember who made it all possible.
Also I actually use this product myself and will endeavor to give you the right advice should you request it.

Traditional dial cord (in the 30’s thru the to the 60’s was a cotton weave and when it aged it simply fell apart. This cord is a synthetic woven (plaited) cord and is 0.8 millimetre in diameter very close to the original cotton products.
Don’t use 0.5mm cord (as used on 1980’s stereos etc. It will slip in the drive and in the dial pointer. Some dial pointers actually ride on the cord and only genuine 1 mm cord will allow secure mounting of the pointer whilst still allowing fine adjustment of the pointer position.
Don’t buy “non flexible” dial cord. It must have the ability to flex tightly around the tuning spindle, and do this repeatedly as the spindle is turned, if it can’t do this it will slip not grip. Also it must have the ability to be tied in small neat knots to create a starting loop and when terminating it onto the dial cord spring.
Dial Cord Trouble Diagnosis:
The Cord banks up on the driving spindle and jams the drive before dial is fully swept: You are using too coarse (heavy) a cord (No that freebie from the old venetian blind is simply not suitable!) You have excessive turns on spindle.
The Driving Spindle slips in cord: You are using cord of incorrect quality: You have little or no tension on the spring; or no spring in circuit: or your cord is contaminated with lubricant; or You have insufficient turns on spindle.
Always refer to manufacturers dial stringing instructions: if there are no instructions then as a general rule use 2 ½ turns on the spindle and adjust only if necessary. Also as a general rule clockwise rotation of the spindle should result in left to right motion of the dial pointer:
And most importantly when the dial pointer approaches the high frequency end of the dial (3AK 2AY) the tuning gang should be almost fully open; if it is closing you may have got it wrong – reassess the whole stringing layout. Also make sure the dial fitted is the correct one for the radio (I have more than once seen wrong dials fitted - wrong brand; wrong direction and wrong scaling - serving only to fill up the space in the cabinet).
Note: as this synthetic material is slightly more slippery than the old cotton, take care with tying your loops and in tying off to ensure a lasting job.
Happy Stringing!
