Brand new copy of Joe Penhall's Plays 2: Blue / Orange; Dumb Show; and Wild Turkey, published in 2008 by Methuen Drama in paperback, 267pp, ISBN 9780713689433
About this book:
Blue / Orange is not so much about a probable schizophrenic, but the issues that spring up around him; issues of definition, diagnosis and control. Penhall places at its core the sticky question of race-specific mental health problems, but, whilst brilliantly articulating his core argument proceeds effortlessly into his themes of humanism versus self-interest, and of politically correct thought versus intellectual freedom. It's a play to be admired for the relentlessly accurate and intriguing rhythms of speech, and its vivid characterisation. Blue / Orange is about what Penhall finds most interesting about people - that a key component about characterisation is paradox. When people conform to our expectations, it bores and disappoints the onlooker; yet when they defy them, they become individuals: memorable and recognisable
Dumb Show is about celebrity and life in that heightened world where self-image and self-promotion become blurred, and about the fragility of a face that presents itself, for profit, to a crowd. But on a more complex level, it's not about a personality, it's about a personality itself. It's about how we construct our public image, or our private personas. It's full of lies and deceit and self-delusion. But the greatest joy of Dumb Show is the simple pleasure of observing three characters instinctively, incessantly, and delightfully unsuccessfully lying about absolutely everything.
Wild Turkey is a much earlier play in the canon and is set in the world of low-end restauranteering: a small steakhouse or burger bar where the characters set up in order to make a modest living. This simple ambition is thwarted not only by a world just beyond the plate glass window that it so utterly deranged even the window can't survive it. There are themes of trust and betrayal and the fragility of our desperately constructed lives.
