Handsome original 1897 antique color lithographed map of the eastern part of South America, with decorative piano-key border, printed more than 120 years ago.
- The coverage area includes Dutch Guiana (Suriname), French Guiana, eastern Brazil (south to the state of Paraná), and a portion of Paraguay.
- There’s an inset of Rio de Janeiro and vicinity.

The map also labels the Amazon River, Pernambuco (Recife), Natal, the Military Colony of Pedro II, Paramaribo, Bahia, Maranhão, Matto Grosso, the Paraná River, Cayenne, Devil's Island (Île du Diable), and São Paulo.
- Other details include lighthouses, light ships, battlefields, steamship routes, submarine telegraph lines, and railroads.
- The image area measures 38 x 26.5 cm [15” x 10½"].
- The map was engraved by the Matthews-Northrup Company.
- It was published by the Century Company of New York and is dated 1897 in the legend.
