Double-Sided Cloth Flags

Historically Based Flag Set

The flags are made from very fine synthetic fabric and printed in full colour on both sides. The correct design is therefore visible from either side of each flag.

The flag designs, shapes and dimensions are prepared using the available historical references, relevant period naval regulations and the 1:150 scale of the compatible model kits.

The fine fabric allows the flags to be shaped naturally after fitting, creating a more realistic appearance than flags made from paper or other rigid materials.

The flags are supplied on one printed fabric sheet and must be carefully cut out before fitting.

Red Draft Marks

Draft marks indicated the depth to which a ship’s hull was immersed. For example, when the waterline reached the mark XX, the vessel had a draft of 20 feet at that position.

Roman numerals were commonly used for historical draft marks. Each numeral and each following space represented half a foot, so their combined height represented one foot. This allowed the ship’s draft to be read with a precision of half a foot.

Monitoring the draft was important when loading provisions, equipment and cargo. It helped the crew distribute the load correctly and avoid excessive loading of the bow, stern or one side of the vessel.

The sheet contains two complete sets of draft marks with red numerals in 1:150 scale. They can be used on two models, or one set can be retained as a spare. The correct range and position must be selected for the particular model.
