Contents of the Set

Double-Sided Cloth Flags

The set includes one printed sheet of flags made from very fine synthetic cloth. The flags are printed in full colour on both sides, so the design is correctly visible from either side.

The flags are supplied printed together on the sheet and must be carefully cut out before shaping and installation on the model.

Photo-Etched Brass Decorations

The set includes photo-etched brass ornaments and the ship’s name inscription for the Thermopylae model.

The parts reproduce the decorative details in a thin and sharply defined form suitable for the 1:96 scale model.

Draft Scales

Draft scales indicated the depth to which the hull was immersed. Historically, Roman numerals were commonly used on these markings.

Each numeral had a height of 6 inches, or half a foot, and the following gap was also 6 inches high. The combined height of one numeral and one gap therefore represented 1 foot. This arrangement allowed the ship’s draft to be read to the nearest half-foot.

For example, when the waterline reaches the upper edge of the XX marking, the indicated draft is 20 feet.

Monitoring the draft was important when loading supplies and cargo. It helped the crew distribute weight correctly, prevent an excessive list and avoid overloading either the bow or stern. Some ships were also designed to have a greater draft at the stern than at the bow.

Using the Draft Scales

The included HiSModel draft scales are universal for ship models in scales from 1:110 to 1:96. Their correct range and exact position must therefore be established for the particular model before installation.

Recommended instructions for preparing and applying the flags and other components can be found in the Workflow section of the HiSModel website.
