Our regular price for this poster is $349    PEPITO the Trumpet-playing Vampire is a limited-edition screen-printed poster—part of a series titled “Happy Together / Felices Juntos”—that was designed in the United States but made in Havana in 2015 to celebrate the newly established diplomatic relations between Cuba and the United States.

This amazing poster salutes Pepito, one of the stars of the famed Cuban film Vampiros en la Habana (Vampires in Havana), which was made by the legendary Cuban animated film director Juan Padrón (1947-2020). Pepito is a trumpet player in Havana in the wild and wooly 1930s who doesn't know he is really a vampire. (Vampires in Havana, the movie, can be found in the United States and Europe on DVD with English subtitles. Two silk-screen posters for this 1985 film can also be found in our eBay Store.)

This hard-to-find PEPITO poster was designed by American graphic artist Víctor Meléndez. The poster was screen-printed in Havana.

The “Happy Together” project was undertaken by two dozen graphic artists in Cuba and the United States who decided to use beloved cartoon and comic-strip characters from the two neighboring countries to highlight the diplomatic relations that were reestablished in December 2014 by U.S. President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro. The U.S. and Cuba became enemies in the early 1960s when they severed diplomatic relations. Obama visited Havana in March 2016.

For the "Happy Together" project, the Cuban and U.S. artists created 24 limited-edition screen prints. In a stroke of diplomatic genius, the Cubans decided to design the U.S. cartoon characters, and the Americans designed the Cuban characters.

The posters were unveiled during the prestigious Havana Art Biennial in May 2015. Only 75 copies were made of each screen-print to offer to the graphic arts market. Each poster is numbered.
