Contents: This is a lovely, glossy, fully illustrated hardback volume (with dustjacket) packed full of black and white images. It vividly recalls the varied history of this distinctive part of North London and contains a fascinating selection of rare photographs to show every aspect of life in Finchley, Hendon, Totteridge, Edgware, the Hadleys and Barnet during a period of momentous national events and unprecedented local change. The illustrations depict the area that is now the Borough of Barnet as it was at the end of the Victorian era. The rapid development that took place in the first part of the 20th Century is portrayed, as are the houses, shops, businesses and entertainments of the time. The book goes on to remember the impact of two world wars and of constant redevelopment, and to describe the changing character of the local community. Perhaps the most telling images illustrate Barnet within more recent memory. Pictures show the austere post-war years and the 1950s, the coming of car parks, shopping centres and supermarkets, and the fads and fashions of successive generations. They also record schools, public services, transport, sports and pastimes as they evolved into the form that is so familiar today. The authors dramatically demonstrate the differences between the Barnet area today and the Barnet of 100 years ago. Their book sadly recalls what the district has lost in terms of buildings and ways of life, but it also acknowledges the regeneration that has taken place and provides a memorable insight into the character of the local people.
