Darlington has been an engineering town since the Industrial Revolution. For many years its prosperity depended on its status as a market town, and on the production of leather and woollen and linen cloth, but the opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway on 27 September 1825 focused the world's attention on this part of North-East England and set the pattern for the development of railway systems throughout Britain and beyond. Darlington became famous for its railway engineering industry, which was centred on the North Road Shops where the LNER (London & North Eastern Railway) built its locomotives. Production grew steadily and by 1930, 54 locomotives and 4,200 wagons were being built at Darlington every year. Other important industries were also based in and around Darlington. William Kitching's ironmonger's shop in Tubwell Row opened in 1790 and from these humble beginnings grew Whessoe, the international group of companies that became a world leader in engineering. Darlington is also famous for such diverse industries as tobacco (Rothmans), wool manufacture (Paton & Baldwins), the engineering firm of Cummins and the Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Co. Ltd., banking, and for the Northern Echo, established in 1870 and still going strong today. The book brings together more than 200 pictures portraying all aspects of the area's industrial history.
