Charles Francis Adams, favored son of John Quincy Adams and grandson to President John Adams, served as the U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom during the American Civil War. Prior to joining the Lincoln Administration in 1861, he had served two terms in the Massachusetts State Senate, and run unsuccessfully as Vice President for the Free Soil Party in the election of 1848.
Reporting as U.S. Minister to the United Kingdom in May of 1861, Adams reached it only to be met by the Queen’s proclamation recognizing the South and expressing sympathy for it. His efforts played a key role in keeping Britain neutral while Southern agents were trying to achieve foreign recognition for the Confederacy. This required him to conduct dialogue with both sides and to monitor the British connections related to the supply of commerce to the South for war purposes. This extraordinary collection of letters from the Civil War provide excellent inside into his role in these and other matters.
"The series of letters printed in these volumes, individual in themselves, make an almost unique combination. The time of writing, the crisis through which not only the nation but republican institutions were passing, the inheritance and position of the writers, and the personal characteristics of each as shown in the letters and as developed in later days, unite to give interest to the subjects treated and the manner of presentation. They are family letters, written in all the freedom of family intercourse; but they are much more than family letters, for the description of social conditions, the discussion of public questions, and the wide relations held by the writers make them a contribution to the social, military and diplomatic history of the War of Secession unequaled in extent and concentrated interest…." – From the Introduction
