Tourmaline is the name of a family of minerals with complex and variable chemical compositions.  Thanks to traces of different chemicals, Tourmaline occurs in over 100 colors.  Ancient Egyptians called it "rainbow rock," and the word Tourmaline comes from the Sri Lankan tur mali, meaning "multi-colored stone."  Schorl, or Black Tourmaline, gets its black color from iron, and accounts for as much as 95% of Tourmaline found in nature.

The best-formed Tourmaline crystals are usually found in pegmatites, a very coarse-grained igneous rock, or in metamorphosed limestones in contact with granitic magma.  Because of its toughness, Tourmaline collects in gravel deposits and also occurs in sedimentary rocks.

In the Metaphysical realm, Tourmaline is said to protect against negative energies like jealousy, anger, and resentment.  It's believed to amplify compassion, good will, and serenity.
