Plot

Hitokiri Battōsai participates in the Battle of Toba-Fushimi and walks away from the battlefield as the victorious Imperialist forces celebrate abandoning his sword. Amongst the fallen is Udo Jin-e who claims the Battōsai's old katana. After a decade, he, now calling himself Him Himura Kenshin, arrives in Tokyo. Meanwhile, Saito Hajime and policemen investigate the murder of an undercover cop by the hands of the Battōsai. But Saito is not convinced by this, and suspects Takeda Kanryū, a wealthy, but cruel businessman. While Kenshin is roaming the streets he meets Kamiya Kaoru, the owner of a Kendo school left to her by her father. She attacks him believing him to be the Battōsai smearing the name of her dojo's teachings, but is later proven wrong when Kenshin reveals he only carries a reversed blade katana. Elsewhere, a woman Takani Megumi, who had escaped from Takeda Kanryū after being forced to make opium, turns to the police for a safe haven after witnessing the deaths of the other opium makers. However, Jin-e, under the service of Kanryū, hunts her down slaying everyone in the police station. But she escapes in the ensuing chaos. Kaoru crosses paths with Jin-e, the perpetrator for killing under her dojo's style of swordsmanship. She is utterly no match for him, being injured in her fight until Kenshin appears and saves her. At that moment Jin-e realizes that Kenshin is the Battōsai before a swarm of policemen rush onto the scene giving Kenshin and Kaoru a chance to flee. Kaoru leads Kenshin to her dojo where they would be safe. Kaoru's only student is a boy named Myōjin Yahiko. Kenshin soon moves in with them after stopping a group of thugs in the employ of Takeda Kanryū from taking over the dojo. Here, Kenshin reveals that he was the Battōsai and quickly beats down his opponents before the police arrive. Kenshin is arrested for possessing a sword and put into a prison cell. Soon Saito recognizes him and releases him. After being released he is greeted by Kaoru who knows Kenshin is not the Battōsai and takes him back to the dojo. Meanwhile, Megumi is still running for her life until she runs into Yahiko on the streets who helps hide her. After returning to the dojo Megumi is introduced to everyone. Kaoru treats everyone to dinner only to be spoiled by Kanryū who is interested in hiring Kenshin, which he humbly declines. Here he is challenged by Sagara Sanosuke for the money offered. Elsewhere, Jin-e goes on a killing spree leaving his mess behind for the cops the following day. Kenshin and company witness the horror, and a woman mourning the death of her lover. This invokes horrifying memories for Kenshin as he committed the exact same kind of crime, which caused him to have the cross-shaped scar on his face. Later that night, one Kanryū's men, a masked man warns Megumi of coming dangers. The next day the people around the dojo fall ill from rat poison that tainted the community wells. Megumi suspects its Kanryū's doing and helps by providing medication for the victims. Angry at Kanryū, Megumi attempts to kill him, but is prevented from doing so and held hostage. Kenshin and Sanosuke attack Kanryū's mansion in hopes to rescue Megumi, besting all his men. Saito Hajime then helps them subdue Kanryū, who had armed himself with a gatling gun. They rescue Megumi, but discover that one of Kanryū's men, Jin-e had kidnapped Kaoru. Kenshin pursues Jin-e and a duel ensues. In order to provoke Kenshin Jin-e uses a special technique that paralyzes Kaoru's lungs that can be undone if Kenshin can kill him. Kenshin critically injures Jin-e, shattering his elbow with his scabbard. Before he could land the killing blow Kaoru overcomes the paralysis and stops Kenshin from killing Jin-e. Then Jin-e then commits suicide telling Kenshin that he cannot escape the path of a murderer before dying. Kenshin takes the unconscious Kaoru back to the dojo where everybody is waiting for them. Upon waking up she realizes Kenshin was not around and goes in search for him, but only to find that he was out picking up some vegetables. She tells Kenshin that the dojo is now his home.
