High among the mountains of
central Asia, a young now leopard (Unica unica) lays claim to a habitat that is
severely challenging, but seldom encroached on by man. The snow leopard is
admired for its beauty and respected for its ability to survive in these steep,
rugged peaks. Its elusive presence and air of mystery have moved some native
inhabitants to bestow upon this great cat a spiritual reverence.
Although actual sightings of
the snow leopard in its natural habitat seldom occur, its image has become
fondly familiar to people throughout the world – due in large part to artists,
such as Charles Frace, who are irresistibly drawn to the cat’s beauty.
“Spiritual Heir,” as most of the snow leopards he has painted, is a cat with
whom Frace has spent many hours of close observation and personal involvement
at a private breeding compound. These privately funded facilities have helped
preserve species for zoos and wildlife parks without intruding on the
populations in the wild.
A portion of the proceeds of
this limited edition benefits the new Nashville zoo to help make possible a
natural habitat exhibit area for black jaguars. Frace has long made it a
practice for his art to fund wildlife programs, particularly those near his Tennessee
hometown. Nashville Zoo director Ricky Schwartz is also a breeders of felines,
and he and his snow leopards have long been very close to Charles and Elke
Frace. It is Frace’s hope that, through his art, people everywhere will feel
closer to this beautiful animal, a true “Spiritual Heir.”
