This lot consists of two checks signed by Henry Latimer, Jr., who served
for three decades as the President of the Bank of Delaware.
Henry Latimer, Jr. (1799-1885) was born in Wilmington, Delaware,
and eventually died in the same city. He spent several years engaged
in business in the city of Philadelphia, before returning to Wilmington
while still a young man. Henry Latimer, Jr. lived much of his life in
a house called "Woodstock", which still exists, and which is also
known as "Banning Park".
His father, Henry Latimer, Sr. (1752-1819) was a physician and politician
who was elected to the Continental Congress in 1784, and who was later
elected to the United States Senate, where he served until 1801.
In 1823, at the age of 24, Henry Latimer, Jr. was selected to be
a director of the
Bank of Delaware. Seventeen years later, in 1841,
he was chosen to be the President of that bank. He held this
position for more than thirty years, before retiring in 1872.
Henry Latimer, Jr. continued to be active in various civic and
business affairs until his death at the age of 85.
One check is 2.5" by 7.8", and is for the amount of $10.
This check is dated June 28, 1824, and is made out to "the bearer".
The other check is 2.7" by 7.8", and is also for the amount of $10.
This check is dated July 24, 1824, and is made out to "D. Gibbons or bearer"
The reverse side of each check is blank (see scan 2).
The checks are in good/very good condition, with moderate wear.
